Journey to Rest
Carter’s journey to his final resting place will begin in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. A motorcade will pass by landmarks significant to his life, including his boyhood home and family farm. His body will then be transported to Atlanta, where a moment of silence will be observed at Georgia's state capitol.
Carter will lie in repose at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta before being taken to Washington, D.C., to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. Following the state funeral, his casket will return to Georgia for a service at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, where he taught Sunday school for decades. The ceremonies will conclude with a private funeral and burial alongside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away earlier in the year.
