SpaceX Reaches New Milestone
Elon Musk’s SpaceX has achieved a significant milestone with the successful launch of its 7,000th Starlink satellite this week. This achievement means SpaceX now controls nearly two-thirds of all active satellites orbiting Earth. Since the inaugural launch in 2019, the Starlink constellation has expanded at an unprecedented pace, averaging three new satellites per day.
Starlink’s Meteoric Rise
According to recent data from the non-profit satellite tracker CelesTrak, SpaceX has 6,370 active Starlink satellites in low-Earth orbit. This represents a more than six-fold increase in just three years, accounting for over 62% of all operational satellites. In contrast, Starlink’s nearest competitor, the UK-based startup OneWeb, operates only about one-tenth as many satellites.
Global Internet Connectivity
SpaceX plans to deploy up to 42,000 satellites to complete the Starlink network, aiming to provide high-speed internet and phone connectivity to even the most remote areas of the globe. Currently, Starlink serves over three million customers across 102 countries, who connect via a $300 ground-based dish and pay a monthly fee. The company also intends to extend its service to additional countries, although nations like Afghanistan, China, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Syria are excluded from the waitlist due to internet restrictions or trade embargoes. Despite these barriers, some individuals in these countries have accessed the network through illegally imported equipment, including activists in Iran who smuggled Starlink receivers into the country in 2022.
SpaceX’s Expanding Influence
“Starlink now makes up roughly two-thirds of all active Earth satellites,” Musk announced on X after the latest SpaceX launch, which deployed 21 additional Starlink satellites aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral on Thursday. This dominance has prompted concerns about the extent of Musk’s influence through SpaceX and the Starlink network. In a tweet from April 2023, Musk remarked, “Between Tesla, Starlink, and Twitter, I may have more real-time global economic data in one head than anyone ever.”
Regulatory Challenges
SpaceX’s rapid expansion is not without challenges. Last week, Brazilian lawmakers introduced a ban on the social media platform X, also owned by Musk. Although Starlink initially made the app available to its Brazilian customers, it has since complied with the blocking order. As SpaceX continues to grow its Starlink constellation, the world is closely monitoring the company’s ambitious plans and the broader implications of its unprecedented influence in space, navigating a complex regulatory and ethical landscape.
